Depends on the severity of the problem. Might be a minute, might be hours.
If you’re having a heart attack, right away. If you have a runny nose and your “emergency” isn’t very emergent, then you wait until the more seriously ill people are taken care of.

A man and his son were admitted unconscious to a local Casualty (Accident and Emergency) department after a car crash. The Casualty Doctor on duty took one look at them and said that they although they had the skills somebody else would have to deal with them. Why was this?

Can I go to the emergency for depression? Will they take me? I am not going to hurt myself or others but I am very upset.

If you go into the ER and tell them that you are depressed and thinking of hurting yourself or others, they will admit you to the psych ward for treatment and observation – it’s required by law. Bear in mind that you do not have to have actually hurt yourself or anyone else – just saying you are THINKING about doing it is enough. Without suicidal/homicidal ideations, it’s up to the doctors. They may just give you a referral to a therapist and send you home. If you think that your depression is serious enough to warrant in patient care, then by all means please please go in and let them know how serious it is and let them know if you have harmed or have thought about harming yourself or anyone else.
Above all else, you deserve to be happy and healthy. I encourage you to go in and tell them that you need in patient care. Your health, mental and physical, comes first here. Best of luck.
