Q&A: Is emergency medicine the only branch of medicine that works late night shifts/weekends?

Question by dharken2: Is emergency medicine the only branch of medicine that works late night shifts/weekends?
I’m looking for a physician to shadow, but I can only do it on weekends (and late night, around midnight, during summer). As far as I saw, only physicians in the emergency medicine department works round the clock. Not even the surgeons and neurosurgeons that I found worked weekends. Anyone know if any other medical specialties work weekends or midnight shifts? Thanks.

At a typical hospital Emergency Medicine will be your best bet. At a level 1 trauma center you might be able to find a surgeon that will let you shadow but most likely not. They are usually havens for interns. Emergency Medicine is excellent because it will let you see a variety of things.

If you are going into Medicine, Emergency Medicine is a great career choice because you don’t have to answer phone calls from your patients and from doctors (like emergency medicine doctors) when your patient’s develop something in the middle of the night. Trust me it will get annoying to even the most enthusiastic doctor. Fortunately Emergency Medicine Doctors don’t have to deal with this.

For any emergency surgeries; you could have yourself listed to be on call. To be on call on ICU patients. For Labor and Delivery. You never know when those mothers will deliver.
